The Bunkers has a remote on All in the Family too. I'll bore you briefly about my work. This is the kind of thing I discuss in class. The social and cultural effects of technological change. If all our books are online, do we need libraries? Librarians? You're absolutely right that remotes, TV dinners, and satellites changed they way we watch tv and the way in which networks and advertisers sell it to us. I used to watch hockey in French because Hockey Night in Canada was usually a Leafs game, and I'm a Habsburg fan. I could only get it on the French CBC though I don't speak French. To this day, I call HNiC Hockey Night in Toronto. Nice John Crosbie reference! I lived in St. John's for 5 years. I started my PhD at MUN though I didn't finish (moved to England and got my PhD from there instead).

I would call these "TV accessories"--maybe? I always lived in an apartment, and I can't imagine an apartment house that would allow the older sort of satellite dish; in fact, most of the apartment buildings in NYC don't allow the cute little modern satellite dishes because they play havoc with the roof surface (if they are put on the roof) and the cables are unsightly and not terribly safe, trailing down the outside walls--and if the dishes are installed outside the windows on the building facades they are even more unsightly, mess up the pointing on brick buildings, and can only get signals on the highest floors. So you see fewer and fewer of them. If anyone every made kosher TV dinners, my mom made sure we never found out about it. We didn't have a TV with a remote until very late--we didn't even have a color TV until very late--because after all, four kids, which was remote enough for my parents! But boy, it sure did change the way we watched TV when we got one.

Haven't posted in a while, but I enjoyed this one so much, I had to. I remember one of the reasons we got cable pretty early on was due to the fact that the box came with a remote control. That made Dad happy, for sure, he could hold the remote while he inevitably fell asleep on the couch. It became quite a game (like the old board game "Don't Wake Daddy!" I guess) to grab it from him so we could watch what we wanted! I loved eating TV dinners every once in a while, and we all had those trays, of course. I collect Transformers and a friend found an old Transformers TV tray for me several years ago. It's useful! And the satellite... We didn't have it, but had friends who did, and I remember being amazed at the channel selection. It was so much more space age than cable, right? As I was listening, I was thinking about an old house we rented, which had a six foot dish in the yard, as late as 2002. Hated mowing around it. I was trying to remember the last time I saw a giant dish and couldn't. Then I turned a corner and lo and behold a B.U.D. in someone's front yard. I drive past it twice a day and never noticed. Great ep, guys. Keep up the great work. Also, AUTOMAN ASAP.
