Did you know that Garry Marshall based Fonzie on a childhood friend of his? In his memoir (Wake Me When It's Funny), Marshall described the friend as "the coolest person and the only person I knew growing up who had a motorcycle." So that's why someone like the Fonz was hanging around with nerdy high school kids--someone something like the Fonz hung around with Marshall. That's the thing about basing fiction on real life--real life doesn't have to be convincing!
