I have never been to Times Square on New Year's Eve. Even when I worked in a building overlooking Times Square, I stayed away on New Year's Eve. Most New Yorkers do not go near Times Square on New Year's Eve, and this is why: It is indeed true that you have to be there 12 or more hours ahead of time, it is indeed true that you are herded into little fenced-in areas, and it is indeed true that if you leave you do not get to go back to where you were. (And even if you decide a bathroom break is worth giving up the place you have been holding for the past 12 hours, almost none of the stores and hotels in the area and absolutely none of the office buildings will let you use their facilities. Do you know what the official government advice to revelers is? Don't drink anything, including water. And while this year it's supposed to be in the 40s, usually it is very cold and often rainy on New Year's Eve. In short, the Times Square ball drop is for tourists and newcomers to the city. Natives generally go somewhere indoors, because walls and ceilings and drinks and also because plumbing.

'and also because plumbing' is my favourite comment you have ever made.....

I have firsthand experience to share from Times Square on New Year's Eve 1999---yes, the big one. We finagled our way into one of the holding pens about 8 blocks down from the center at about 5pm that day, thanks to a friend who lived in Manhattan. And yes, you're forced to stay huddled in your group the whole time. Though I'm originally from NY, it's true, the people that pack the area are/were mostly out-of-towners and foreigners, everyone in a good mood, I recall. I mainly remember the frozen fingers & toes, McDonalds employees coming to the crowd to sell $8 Big Macs, and a fellow reveler taking a whiz on the street right next to me. Welcome to the new millennium! Meanwhile, some feedback: I've enjoyed the seasonal/holiday shows a lot! I definitely share some of those same reference points with you guys, with the nonstop Scrooge tales... I have fond memories of New Year's Eve with the grandparents and getting excited by a sip of champagne and getting to watch Dick Clark and co.

Thanks Sam! I think I can speak for the boys by saying we're glad you liked it! We don't usually have time over the holidays, but this year we did, so a New Years' one made sense. When I was a kid I wanted to go to Times Square. Now I just want to drink Pernod and play xbox.....

You guys are dead on about Dick Clark's return after his stroke. It was sad in every way and honestly made me feel worse for watching it. It seemed either exploitative or egotistical, perhaps both. Anyway, great eps lately, haven't had much time to listen, so getting caught up. Keep it up fellas!
