Regarding the demise of the Variety Show, I would suggest that YouTube and teh innerwebs are the new variety show/Vaudeville.
Slugore
YouTube may be the replacement for occupying time, but it misses the loud and gaudy production values that went into the variety show era.

I really liked Bosom Buddies when it came out but the retooling in season 2 ruined it. I also liked Peter Scolari when he ended up on Newhart and I most recently saw him on HBO's Girls playing Hannah's (Lena Dunham) dad. There was nudity involved! Stephanie Vanderkellen would have been shocked.

Jason: I saw that credit for Girls (which I stopped watching mid-Season One). Cool that Scolari's still part of the cultural zeitgeist. Marc: Are there days when you feel 55 or over? Those are Old Spice days. :-) Jamie: I'd totally forgot about Street Hawk until I went to the Wiki page. When I saw Rex Smith, memories came flooding back... not all good. :-) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfIGa_9Pouo

Whatever else Roz Kelly may have done in her acting career, Pinky Tuscadero was a recurring character in Happy Days and once love interest of Fonzie. I never got to see Busom Buddies, but I did see Tom Hanks' TV appearance in Family Ties.

I wrote a whole long comment (which mentioned Beverly Sills and Major Bowes and Bye Bye Birdie) yesterday, but Chrome ate it. So I'll just say, fun show! Also, I totally remembered both ads. I have a head STUFFED with old ad jingles, it appears.

Great choice in picking Bosom Buddies, guys... and glad we agree on it being pretty solid. And Donna Dixon? Good lord. Justin Timberlake also had a moment on Star Search, singing country.
