Best Episode Ever S3E13 - Short Runs

Download Best_Ep_S3_E13_-_Short_Runs.mp3

My mea culpa on not having a guest this week is followed by an episode I hope you enjoy about a bunch of short run series from the 70s and 80s that are oft-memorable and forgettable at the same time. A whole bunch of theme song goodness in this one thanks to YouTube.

I remember watching Quark when it was first on. There's no way a show like that would have a chance today. But at the time there was practically nothing on TV in the way of sci-fi and after the success of Star Wars stations were scrambling to find any sci-fi they could air. The demand was also responsible for Battlestar Galactica and the popularity of anime in NA.

I liked Man from Atlantis. I think the problem with the series is that they relied too much on one villain for the start of the series. The later episodes had more variety and more experimental sci-fi stories, but by that time it was too late.

I never watched Lucan nor was even aware of it.

The Logan's Run TV series really had nothing to do with the movie, although I liked it.

It's interesting that many of these shows are the same sort of stories that appear in many children's live-action shows. But during the 70s there just wasn't anything for kids other than the Saturday morning stuff. And everyone in the house watched the same TV. Prime time shows tended to be more family friendly.

No show about airlines has ever been a success. LAX lasted only a single season and it appears this season's Pan AM will have only 14 episodes.

I thought I saw Supertrain but what I recall was Time Express which had a Fantasy Island premise. It didn't last more than four episodes but it did star Vincent Price. It definitely beats Supertrain for obscurity.

Patrick, thanks for sharing your memories of these shows. It's amazing how even one episode or theme song can spark so many memories even years later. Even you mentioning Time Express seems to jog something in the cobweb-adled recesses of my mind.
Jamie, thanks for the feedback and the recommendations. I've been thinking about Thundarr for a while, so you may hear something before the end of the season.

Anthony, thank you for the best episode ever of Best Episode Ever! I remember a lot of these shows fondly, particularly Quark and Man from Atlantis, but I literally shouted when you brought up Flying High. I started watching that show for the same reasons you did and thought no one remembered it. So cool to hear that theme song again.

I love this podcast, but I hope you don't mind me saying that I really prefer when it's a solo show. Not everyone can pull off a solo podcast--you're one of the few who does it well. Just saying.

I first fell in love with Sci Fi on Logans Run as well. It was great to take the imagination into the future. Years later I was given a copy of Battlefield Earth and for the first time I ventured into the reading fantasy adventure of Science Fiction. It was quite amazing last night as Maureen and I were going to sleep after watching a great movie call The Longest Ride. We were trying to remember other great movies and I found it was hard to recall. But when I thought of the great books that I had read, the recall was so much clearer. This is the power of reading and the use of imagination through reading. Thanks Guys, good to get a recall of the oldies. Mike.
